5/24/2023 0 Comments Beth macy author![]() ![]() ![]() Macy reports on the people, often personally motivated and detached from any official policy response, whose central purpose is to get victims’ voices heard and to achieve accountability from companies and executives behind the flood of opioids, including Purdue Pharma and the members of the Sackler family, in the initial wave of the crisis. “We now have a generation of drug users that started with heroin and fentanyl.” “At this point, too much attention is focused on stemming the oversupply of prescription opioids,” Macy writes. Raising Lazarus is more personal, and looks more closely at what can be done to solve the opioid abuse mess, even as it morphs away from the pharmaceutical industry mis-marketing that started it. It became the touchstone account of a sprawling crisis of corporate malfeasance and regulatory mismanagement that largely eluded the criminal justice system despite killing about a million people. Macy’s previous book, Dopesick, charted the rise of prescription painkillers through the 1990s and early 2000s. ![]()

![]() The train line doesn’t matter, but his bloodline does.īracknell loves money. The best thing about it is that the characters are completely unaware of their own absurd hypocrisy. When Jack explains the details of the train line he was left at, she ironically exclaims: “The line is immaterial.” And that such a marriage would remind her of: “the worst excesses of the French revolution.” The dialogue is utterly genius. Jack undergoes a great deal of social mobility prior to the events of the play however, Bracknell, who represents the rigidness of British aristocracy, is very alarmed that such a man could marry her daughter. ![]() This is just absurd, outrageous and straight to the point. ![]() What a penetrating critique of high Victorian society this becomes but rather than being a dull argument or essay, it takes on the body of a hilarious play. ![]() ![]() ![]() Moral compasses spin out of control as a final battle storms through what was once a sanctuary for the gifted. The first book in this series, Grounded: The Adventures of Rapunzel, took Rapunzel from her tower and introduced her to the world of Tyme, a land of witches, fairies, and magic. ![]() Did I mention I found this in the children’s section? Not only are they some of the best revisionist fairy tales I’ve read, the book I picked up, Disenchanted: The Trials of Cinderella, was also centered on social justice and the ills of child labor. The back cover told me it was the second in a series, so I grabbed the first book, as well, and went home to see if they were any good. I didn’t have any other recommendations from friends or websites, so I ended up in the children’s section, picking out, somewhat at random, what looked like a fairy tale adventure with a Black protagonist. I now know Hollie Jackson has a large repertoire of “voices” and I am filled with respect for her. ![]() At the time, I didn’t realises it was in order to distinguish between all the lead women participating in the series - because they are often speaking together in subsequent books.
